Travel companies join in with Red Nose Day fundraising. 18th March - Many of the UK's biggest names in travel have been doing their bit for this year's Red Nose Day to raise money for Comic Relief.

 

Cruising from British ports increases by 14%. 18th March - Figures released by Cruise Britain show that the numbers of people sailing from the UK has increased for the seventh year in a row.

 

Travel technology news

 

New project uses social media to boost tourism in New Zealand. 21st March - The Blog4Nz project will run from today until Wednesday (23 March) and is a social media campaign which aims to encourage travellers to continue to visit the country despite the recent earthquake in the town of Christchurch.

 

Canada uses Google to encourage visitors off the beaten track. 18th March - The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) is working with Google Maps and Street View to incorporate the latest mapping technology into their online ads.

 

Tourism Ireland unveils Facebook game. 17th March - Tourism Ireland has launched Ireland Town, a social game for Facebook which is aimed both at fans of Ireland and those who enjoy Facebook’s other social games such as Farmville and Cityville.

News from SXSWi 2011: The internet is over. 15th March – Guardian Technology report from South by Southwest Interactive, where it is claimed that the boundary between reality and the online world will soon disappear.
